Tearing Away The Myths of Mental Illness Text size Print
The Video “Tearing Away The Myths of Mental Illness” has been developed to provide tools and information on mental illness to individuals working with adolescents. It is hoped that this video will assist adolescents to develop an awareness, provide information on resources and increase skills to cope with mental illness.

The video provides basic information about mental illness and addresses some of the myths and the effects of stigma and stereotyping. The audience is taken through the various stages of dealing with a mental illness - from symptoms, to reaction of friends and family, to finding help, coping on a personal level and working together towards recovery.

The discussion guide contains information on mental illness, and includes a series of activities designed to increase youths' general awareness of mental illness. All activities are intended for use with the video. Facilitators are encouraged to choose activities according to the needs, abilities, and interests of the individuals. Depending on the time available, the activities can be used individually or combined over several sessions to build upon individuals' awareness and sensitivity to mental health issues.
